Grounded
02:18
|
|||
I was reading you poetry
You were waiting for the punch line
A laugh track to the fall back
Chased me back to the default salt mine
Now you can’t be serious and
I’m seriously lost
Date lines flying
Fault lines lying
We were winning but the finish line faded
Thought we arrived but we never made it
I was preaching my prophecy
You were waiting for the (guitar solo)
We were winning but the finish line faded
Thought we arrived but we never made it
Now you can try to analyze it, try to break it down
Tear my heart and soul apart and tell me what you found
But the pieces don’t reveal it
You can’t feel it when you’re stuck on the ground
Grounded

Jacket (Hangin' Around)
02:42
|
|||
I was reading you poetry
You were waiting for the punch line
A laugh track to the fall back
Chased back to the salt mine
Lion in the Winter creeping back into the Spring
Your finish line is fading, oh
In the time it takes to count to 3
I’m the jacket hangin’ ‘round your chair
You don’t need me but I’m always there, hangin’ around
Icing the equator, I sing the equator
I’ve been trying to write this book
Or maybe it’s a Bible
Either way, it’s a dead giveaway
A horn blasting into the naked night
I’m the jacket hangin’ ‘round your chair
You don’t need me but I’m always there, hangin’ around

At the wedding with the bridesmaids
Try to look refined
Drinking wine at beer speed
A lap ahead of the pace car
And I slurred my line
Drinking wine at beer speed
At the meeting with the big boss
You got a ladder to climb
Drinking wine at beer speed
Two laps ahead of the pace car
And I slurred my line
Drinking wine at beer speed

How you lay there I don’t wanna know
Clearly written, “Finn’s Motel # 7 by the ice machine.
Hang something purple from the door and wait there.”
(Secrets silently resolve)
Why you came here you could never know
Lion pacing, lying still
#7 by the ice machine
You cross the room, you cross the line
So you wait on the summer side of town
Windows turning red in rooms inside your head
While you wait for a father to approve
Sister step into the other side of the room
Or a country mile

Awake, Alive, Alone
03:00
|
|||
Shaken awake by a banging freight train heartbeat
In a lingering light an hour before the Sun
Had that same hotel room dream, and
I think I know what it means this time
But I’m buzzed and wired and way too tired to sleep
So tell me, when did you stop being my sculpture?
And why didn’t I see it coming from chapter three?
Had you painted in black and white, but
You stepped into the light and you’d taken on
New colors I could never quite describe
While you made the change so easily
With grace that made it seem like you were dancing
While I fight against a track that’s bending
Scratching out the ending to the song
It’s been a hundred eighty-two days since the new year, and
It’s a hundred eighty-three before it’s done, and
For twelve of the last fifteen
We’ve been stuck on the in-between drifting
Like this was all a stop along the way
But now I’m awake, alive, alone
Awake, alive, alone

On a wing and a wave gone away, gone away
Into the bright light realm of the king
Oh, the wolf and the whale gone away, gone away
Into the bright light realm of the king
We didn’t know the equators we were crossing
Seeking to know
Stealing fire from the wheel
On a wing and a wave gone away, gone away
Into the bright light realm of the king
We didn’t know the equators we were crossing
Seeking to know
Stealing fire from the wheel
On a wing and a wave gone away, gone away
Into the bright light realm of the king

Waiting on a wing to take me south of here
Wish that I could say that I was sorrier, but
I am the plane as the wheels lift off the ground
Used to make me think I could do anything
Then my flying feet fell out like baby teeth, and
The shoe just started to fit before I knew it
I was slinging stones at swinging low sweet chariots, it’s true
The Just Reward is just a dream
This time freedom comes from leaving
Not celestial decree from sacred eagles
Calling on Apollo to calm this turbulence
I really must admit it does make karmic sense
In a past life I would agree that I deserved it, but
Today I couldn’t say I would reverse it, yeah it’s true
The Just Reward is just a dream
This time freedom comes from leaving
Not celestial decree from sacred eagles
Wings are not made of angels

It's a Sign of Weakness
03:21
|
|||
Never let ‘em see that side
Hold back the want, and
The need will slide away
Hold all the want inside
Hide all the need inside, love
Your secret side is safe
It’s a sign of weakness
A flashing face betrays the fall
Don’t leave them time to read it on the wall
On the ground and running south
Long nights alone
Staying one step ahead of the dogs
Drawn in convincing lines
All that excited talk, my love
Stay out of sight ‘til then
It’s a sign of weakness
Don’t lean into the wall
If a single stone is loose the rest will fall
Don’t talk (gone south)
Don’t even breathe it (keep it out of sight)
No, she didn’t mean it when she said (no signal that would indicate)
Maybe you should leave it alone (that you were leaving alone)
Don’t start to give an inch or a reason (don’t stop to read it gotta keep it going)
Don’t move before you know it’s safe (when you make the move don’t hesitate)
To break the egg shell
Oh, he said
It’s a sign of weakness
Don’t lean into the wall
If a single stone is loose the rest will fall

Icing the Equator
02:43
|
|||
We disappear into a sky untangled
High above the web of wires and
Tilted poles that hold us down
Bringing them in from the East
Sending them out to the West
By the time you hear the sound
You know it’s already gone
Across the sky, across the waves
Across the sky, across the waves
A sudden vision of a plane descending
Comes in through the sideways eye
Between the Devil and the deep blue sea
Bringing them in from the West
Sending them out to the East
By the time it touches down
Well you were already gone
Across the sky, across the waves
Crossing lines, crossing days
Across the sky, across the waves

Down With the Ship
02:44
|
|||
Riverboat captain hit the deck running
Engine room burning hull wall cracking
Too late now, we’re going down
Red smoke fire cold black water
Wish it was summer, wish you were a swimmer
Too late now, we’re going down
Going down
Going down with the ship, going down
Riverboat captain hit the deck running
Engine room burning hull wall cracking
Too late now, we’re going down
Going down
Going down with the ship, going down

Lateral Drift
02:59
|
|||
Lost the sense of direction
Compass got locked as we crossed the pole
Should we pull over and ask for direction?
Better yet, let’s redraw the map
Sliding sideways off the highway
Trying to find a straight line in a drift, adrift, a lateral drift
Caught in a drift, adrift, a lateral drift
Lost the simple affection
Hearts have been frozen under two feet of snow
Should we move away to somewhere warmer?
Or better yet, let’s make a pledge to rediscover
Tropic of Capricorn, Tropic of Cancer
Trying to find a straight line in a drift, adrift, a lateral drift
Caught in a drift, adrift, a lateral drift

Early Spring
02:42
|
|||
Landing in San Diego feels like baseball is in season
A late St. Louis snowfall, as if I needed a reason
To wish for an early Spring
I don’t know what’s keeping this one
It looks like an early Spring
Woke up with your song in my head sounding a lot like an answer
To questions I was afraid to ask crossing the Tropic of Cancer
In search of an early Spring
I don’t what’s keeping this one
It looks like an early Spring
Like all my moments have led up to this one
Still I let it go and walk away
Wish for an early Spring
It looks like an early Spring

The sun does not apologize for the day
So I offer my confession to the wind
Many waters waiting but I cannot find the way
Silver stones and welcome bones lead me to the lake
The sky makes no excuses for the rain
Still I make a thousand promises and vows to try
Feel the anchor dropping but I cannot hold the weight
Pull the blanket over me and sink under the waves
If all is everything then nothing’s to blame
When mountains fall and rivers run away
Behind these mountains there are more mountains
Many waters waiting there new rivers forming
Runaway you’re almost home
This is not dying
If all is everything then nothing’s to blame
When mountains fall and rivers run away

Finn's Motel St Louis, Missouri
Finn’s Motel started as the brainchild of Joe Thebeau, a home recording geek. It has evolved into a rock band and production collective, making albums and videos. In the early days, musicians checked in and out of the Motel as needed. But in 2018, the lineup solidified with the addition of Jack Petracek and Scott Roever alongside Steve Scariano, the only other permanent resident of the Motel. ... more
